ARRECTOR PILI MUSCLES/RETREAT Card Message:
Arrector Pili muscles are the body’s tiniest muscles which are attached to hair follicles and are responsible for ‘hair standing on end’/hair raising and goose bumps. These muscles play a role in our physiological response to fear/stress/strong emotion; they respond involuntarily via the activation of our sympathetic nervous system and they help us retain body heat (survival energy!).
The Arrector Pili muscles engage only during fight/flight/freeze response, aka survival mode. This is your body’s physiological response to perceived danger, be it processed internally or externally…meaning that your perception of danger can come from your inner world as much as it comes from your outer world. What you believe/sense/think is true, is how your body responds… These muscles respond in a protective manner, reminding you that you have more power to choose how you show up in the world than you have been conditioned to believe.
The warrior in the image has transformed her sword into a tree branch or a branch of the nervous system. The wavy lines around her head/hair represent incoming information being processed by the nervous system, which is associated with the heart energy represented by the clock. The way we process information through our senses and heart center affect how our nervous system responds. The result of that processed information creates our experience in our body, mind, and life…it creates our inward/outward responses, what we tell ourselves about our experience and how we respond/react, or show up, for others.
This card, as well as the arrector pili muscles in your body, serve as a reminder to retreat from the stressors in the world you are engaged in… the ongoing fear-based media coverage (only take what you need and stop engaging if/when your stress response engages…that is your signal you’ve had enough for now), the thoughts in your head that take you deep into stress/fear/strong emotions (it’s okay to feel them, but not to your detriment…not to the point that you retreat from the world or ‘puff up’ in a defensive manner in response to yourself, others, or the world),
It is time to back down or back away from that which threatens your safety, sense of comfort/joy, or causes you to stay in defensive mode any longer than is absolutely necessary (and even with the covid19 threat, there is safety in responsible action to be created!). It is time to let your guard down and trust that YOU will keep you safe through conscious choice and responsible action that align you with what you need to feel safe, secure, and less guarded.
If you have been in stress/survival mode too long, it is likely you are fatigued in your body-mind-soul, not sleeping well or having days/nights confused, or that you are having digestive issues or muscular tension/pain (or headaches). This is your signal to lower your sword, let down your defenses/guard, and lean into the safety you have and are creating for yourself. The current threat has been identified, along with steps to ensure your safety…focus on safety, safe action/precautions, and what is safe for you right now in this moment to help your arrector pili muscles and your primal brain settle into a more comfortable new normal…it is time to rest and reserve your energy for what comes next…a new normal, new opportunities and optimal potential for creating something better…for you, and for all…
The overall message of this card is to take a step back from stressful things so you can fully recover on all levels of being: body, mind, emotions, and energy/spirit. You cannot control the happenings in the world right now, but there can be comfort in accessing the power to control how you feel. It will help you navigate the world and be in your body more comfortably as we move forward through and beyond the covid-era to what is becoming our new normal.
SIMPLE ALIGNED PRACTICAL ACTION you can take to help shift out of stress/survival physiology (aka fight-flight-freeze mode) and into relaxed/safe physiology (aka rest-digest mode):
